Aluminium wire is one of the most conductive options available for electric fencing. Its very low electrical resistance helps transmit the energiser pulse efficiently over long distances, making it particularly useful for permanent perimeter fences and extensive livestock systems.

It is considerably lighter and more pliable than steel wire, so it is relatively straightforward to carry, unroll and form around suitable connectors. Aluminium also develops a protective oxide layer that helps it resist corrosion during long-term outdoor use.

This wire is available in 1.6mm, 1.8mm and 2mm diameters. The thinner wire is lighter and easier to work with, while the larger diameters provide a more substantial conductor for permanent installations.

Aluminium is softer than steel and behaves differently when tensioned. It should normally be installed hand-tight rather than strained as heavily as high-tensile steel. Excessive tension can permanently stretch the wire and place unnecessary strain on posts, insulators and fittings.

It is intended to be installed once and left in position. It is not suitable for temporary fences that are regularly moved or for winding repeatedly on and off a reel. Polytwine or braid is a better choice for rotational grazing and mobile fencing.

The wire is suitable for permanent cattle, sheep, pig and general livestock fences when installed with compatible insulators, connectors and tensioning hardware. It should not be used as a horse paddock boundary because its narrow profile is difficult for horses to see and rigid metal wire can increase the risk of injury.

Mixing aluminium and dissimilar metals in a damp outdoor environment can lead to galvanic corrosion. Connections should therefore be made with fittings intended for aluminium electric fence wire rather than improvised joins.
